High School: English

Junior English

by Karen Burrows

March 21, 2007

Juniors will begin the year by studying The Freedom Writers Diary: How a Teacher and 150 Teens Used Writing to Change Themselves and the World Around Them. As the juniors read, they'll keep their journals with responses to what they read and take part in a number of other activities, including letter writing, role-playing, debating, and literature-analysis.

We'll also study Greek and Latin root words this semester to prepare for the State Reading Assessment, which the juniors will take in early December. Good news--no vocab books this year!

Juniors will also complete a weekly non-fiction reading assignment to help build and maintain reading comprehension skills.

Once we finish up with the Freedom Writers, we'll move on to our American  literature anthology, focusing this semester on the colonial and revolutionary periods.
