It is hard to believe that the end of the school year is quickly approaching! Where has the time gone? In the 2nd grade classrooms, the students have worked very hard in all subject areas. In reading the students have started checking out non-fiction books. They realized that it is different from reading fiction books when they took their first AR test on a non-fiction book. In reading centers they are learning that non-fiction books are full of information and they need to pay attention to all of the information and may need to read the book several times before taking the test. Thank you parents for reading your students AR book with them at home each evening.
The students were able to help celebrate Dr. Seuss’s birthday at the beginning of March. During the day, the 2nd graders did many different activities that dealt with Dr. Seuss books. The students made a hat to wear during the activities. Some of the activities included: making a flag of a different country to correspond with the book Oh, the Places You’ll Go, standing on an actual pair of stilts as the King did in the book The King’s Stilts and making a picture of themselves if they were the teacher as in Hooray for Diffendoofer Day! The students enjoyed the day and even celebrated by eating cupcakes.
In social studies the 2nd grade class was able to tour the Grant County Historical Adobe Museum in Ulysses. The students toured the museum after Kansas Day and were able to connect history of Kansas to artifacts that were in the museum. The students also made their own adobe brick out of dirt, water and wheat straw. No, we did not put in horse manure, but that is what was used in the olden days to make their adobe bricks. The students were excited to see the room in the museum that showed the adobe bricks.
The students could not believe that the entire museum was made out of adobe bricks! After the tour of the museum, the students enjoyed a free Sonic ice-cream cone. Thank you Sonic for providing each student with that sweet treat! All of the 2nd graders have worked very hard this year and have made tremendous progress. Miss Nelson and I would like to thank all of the parents that have worked with your child over the past school year in reading and math. Thanks Again!
