Satanta Students Excel in Scholarship Contest

                Students from 165 schools throughout the state recently participated in the 86th annual State of Kansas Scholarship Contest, sponsored by the Office of Assessment and Teaching Enhancement Center at Emporia State University.

According to Dr. Anthony Ambrosio, Director of the Assessment and Teaching Enhancement Center, the contest is one way in which ESU recognizes outstanding scholastic achievement by Kansas students in grades 7 through 12.

                Ambrosio said that 4,872 students participated in this year’s contest in a variety of 11,585 tests. The 50 subject tests cover the nine areas of language arts, literature, mathematics, science, social science, business, computer science, family and consumer science, and Spanish.

                There are six levels of classes according to school size; three for high schools and three for junior high/middle schools. Satanta Junior Highs students competed on three levels: within the Hi-Plains League, within their class division, and within the state of Kansas.  The following are individual honors earned by Satanta students:  R. Zimmerman—English VII first in league, second in class division, and third in state; Spelling VII first in league, first in class division, first in state; Science VII first in league, first in class division, first in state.  She also is awarded a scholarship to Emporia State University.  K. Blankenship—Spelling VIII second place in league, honorable mention in class division, and honorable mention in state. R. Pando—American History first in league, first in class division, and second in state. K. Clawson—Kansas History tie for first in league. K. Smith—Kansas History second in league. T. Fuentes—Kansas History tie for third in league. The results placed Satanta Junior High School third overall out of the 57 schools in Satanta’s class division.
