Forensics Students Prepare for Upcoming Season

Home tournament to be held Jan. 30

by Janis Grover

October 02, 2009

Twenty-five SHS students have joined the 2009-10 forensics team. Fourteen of the students were able to enroll in the class, which was offered as an elective this year, while eleven others opted to participate in the activity independently. While there are several returning forensicators, there are just as many novices, or first-year competitors, making up this year's group. The students are led by head coach Janis Grover and assistant coach Ryan Burrows.

This year's roster includes G. Anton, M. Bailly, K. Blankenship, S. Caro, K. Clawson, K. Clawson, T. Dillon, S. Evans, T. Fuentes, M. Gonzalez, C. Henderson, V. Longoria, J. Longoria, Z. Martinez, W. Miller, H. Pickens, R. Rankin, C. Shepard, B. Small, K. Stogsdill, P. Ungles, R. Valdez, A. Young, M. Young and R. Zimmerman.

Much of the time spent so far has focused on finding pieces and speech topics that "fit" each student's interests as well as personality. While it can be a time-consuming and sometimes frustrating undertaking, the hope is that each student has an opportunity to perform a piece or speech that is not only interesting to the student but will also do well in competition.

In addition to competition selections, students are currently contemplating fundraiser possibilities and gearing up for the annual home tournament, which is scheduled for Saturday, Jan. 30. If you are interested in judging and available on that day to do so, be sure to contact a forensics student or coach to let them know. Community involvement plays a huge role in pulling off a successful tournament, and your involvement is appreciated not only by the Satanta team but by all of the attending teams.
