Satanta Students Invited to Participate in Book Challenge

By Lizeth Duran

The Satanta High School Library has announced that it will be sponsoring a William Allen White (WAW) Book Challenge this spring. All Satanta Junior High students will be invited to participate. The William Allen White Book Challenge is inspired by William Allen White. White was born on February 10, 1868, in Emporia, Kansas, and is best known as a newspaper editor, politician, and author. Students in grades six through eight will begin this challenge shortly after returning from Spring Break. The students will be given eleven books from which to choose. Students will earn a candy bar for each WAW book they read, providing they pass the AR test on the given book. Students will also be encouraged to vote online for their favorite WAW books. By the end of April, students who have read all the WAW books will earn an Amazon gift card in an amount to be determined by the number of participants completing the challenge. In the future, Satanta library paraprofessional Terri Rankin hopes to expand this challenge to include a field trip to Emporia State for the university’s annual book celebration. More information can be found on the William Allen White Book Awards at https://www.emporia.edu/libsv/wawbookaward/.
