By Lizeth Meza
The Satanta Junior High Quiz Bowl kicked off the year with the goal winning the SPIAA League Tournament and ended the year doing just that. Ella Burrows, Jody Zimmerman, Preston Clingenpeel, Erick Olivas, Kacen Anthony, and Addison King, along with their coach Joyce Apsley, were pleased with the outcome of this year’s SPIAA league tournament, which was held at Minneola Elementary School on March 31. There the team defeated 10 teams, dropping only two rounds. Defeating Ingalls, Pawnee Heights, Bucklin, Hodgeman County, South Central, Ashland, Minneola, Kiowa County, Spearville, Fowler, and only losing to South Gray and Haviland, the team ended the day with a 10-2 record, which was good enough for first place!
This is the third year in a row that the Satanta Junior High Quiz Bowl team has earned league champ honors. Coach Joyce Apsley said, “The success of our quiz bowl teams the past few years is due to the dedication of the young ladies and gentlemen who participate. We began practice in November this year. We practiced before school during basketball season, which means the students have to be dedicated to be at school early.” The team ended the year with many other great tournament finishes: first at Haviland, fourth at Pawnee Heights, fourth at Ashland, third at South Gray, first at Moscow, and first at home where the junior varsity team placed third. Ryan Burrows says, Satanta High School Scholars’ Bowl coach says, “I am excited to get the opportunity to work with these students next year. In many ways, the success of our high school team is built by our junior high team, which has had a great deal of success the last three years under the leadership of Mrs. Joyce Apsley."
