The Satanta High School Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) LifeSmarts Knowledge Bowl Team, consisting of RaeAnne Blevins, Adan Gutierrez, Ella Burrows, Addison King, and Maddison Jaso, captured second place at the FCCLA National Leadership Conference held in Atlanta, Georgia, June 28-July 2.
To reach the championship round, the team competed against 15 other teams representing high schools of all sizes from across the country. On Friday, June 29, the team made the quarterfinal round of eight, qualified for the semifinal round of four, and advanced to the championship round, which was held later on Sunday, July 1. In the championship round, a team from Brookings, South Dakota, defeated Satanta with a score of 75-115.
Knowledge Bowl involves, according to the national FCCLA website, a three-level team competition that challenges students' knowledge in six content areas:
- Personal Finance
- Consumer Rights & Responsibilities (including Family, Career & Community Studies)
- Technology (including Fashion & Housing Design)
- Health & Safety (including Food Sciences & Nutrition and Early Childhood & Human Development)
- Environment (including Hospitality, Tourism & Recreation)
- FCCLA Knowledge
The competition is part of the larger FCCLA organization, a “national Career and Technical Student Organization that provides personal growth, leadership development, and career preparation opportunities for students in Family and Consumer Sciences education.” The organization has more than 160,000 members in 5,300 chapters spread across 49 states, Puerto Rico, and the US Virgin Islands. Mrs. Judy Stuckey, who serves as Satanta Junior-Senior High School’s Family and Consumer Science (FACS) teacher, sponsors the Satanta FCCLA chapter. Mrs. Stacey King, a Kindergarten teacher at Satanta Elementary, attended the national convention as a school sponsor and event judge.
Travel expenses to Atlanta were covered by FCCLA fundraising efforts that included three take-out meals. The team wishes to thank the community of Satanta and members of the surrounding area for helping make the trip to Nationals possible. Without the support of Satanta, USD 507, and individuals in the community, this trip would not have been possible.
