Satanta High School Captures 2019 SPIAA League Scholars’ Bowl Title

By Ryan Burrows

The Satanta High School Scholars’ Bowl team captured the SPIAA league title on January 7, 2019, at the league tournament at Pawnee Heights. The team, consisting of senior Adan Gutierrez; juniors Jaylon Essix, Andrew Heimerich, and Sami Small; and sophomores Ella Burrows and Jody Zimmerman, went 10-1 on the day, defeating opponents from Ashland, Bucklin, Hodgeman County, Ingalls, Kiowa County, Minneola, Pawnee Heights, South Central, South Gray, and Spearville. This was a notable victory for the team, which to this point had earned four state championship banners but had somehow found a SPIAA league title much more elusive.

At the conclusion of the meet, Adan Gutierrez and Ella Burrows were recognized as members of the SPIAA All-League Team, an honor they share with 10 other players from across the league. This meet concluded the regular season for the team, which has shifted its focus to preparing for the KSHSAA 1A Regional Tournament, which is to be hosted by Satanta on January 31. Thirteen teams will compete at this meet vying for two spots at the state tournament at Moundridge High School in February.
