Southern Pioneer Electric Awards Satanta Grade School H.U.G.S. Grant

By Ryan Burrows

Members of Southern Pioneer Electric H.U.G.S. team recently made a trip to Satanta to present USD 507 with a $3,158.15 grant award. The H.U.G.S. program, which stands for Helping Us Give to Society, is funded by Southern Pioneer Electric’s recycled materials program. Money from the sale of materials like aluminum, copper, and steel are used to fund community projects in the 10 counties that the electric cooperative serves.

The grant money given to USD 507 will be used to help further implement its Pathways to Reading program, which is described as a curriculum for beginning and struggling readers that “helps teachers understand and apply the five scientifically validated core components of the reading process: Phonemic Awareness, Phonics, Fluency, Vocabulary, and Comprehension.” Satanta Grade School reading interventionist Leanne Howie indicated that the grant money will provide “high interest/low readability books that will allow our students to practice the skills taught in the Pathways program.”  The grant was accepted by Satanta Principal Heather Stegman on Friday, January 11, 2019.
