SCCC “The Little Mermaid” theater production

By Claudia Jones

On Friday April 5, 2019, a group of Satanta students and teachers (along with other adult sponsors and their children) attended Seward County Community College’s production of the The Little Mermaid. This group included high school students Adan Gutierrez, Sydney McKinney, Jody Zimmerman, Sicely Jackson, Leslie Cabrera, and Brittani Lauppe; junior high students included Maddison Ross, Juliana Carbajal, Kara Kunselman, Alexa Salcedo-Pena, Miranda Salas, Ahtziri Alvarado, Yasmin Morales, Magali Salamanca, Sean Wagner, Ebony Torres, Chelsee Hill, and Maylea Alexander; teachers and sponsors included Ryan and Karen Burrows, Valarie Williamson, Crystal Naylor, Sarah Alexander, Brad and Christy Jackson; they were joined by the children of the sponsors: Blake Jackson, Tallen Jackson, Trapper Jackson, Dylan Jackson, Brooke Naylor, and Mia Burrows.

As he has done for the past several years, Mr. Ryan Burrows organized this trip for Satanta students interested in live theater. Such shows have included Hairspray, Into the Woods, and Sister Act. “I believe in the magic of live theater,” said Burrows. “My passion for Broadway shows was awakened when I attended Garden City Community College and traveled to New York City with Skip Mancini. I’d love to take a group of Satanta students to see a touring show in Wichita next school year. Who wouldn’t want to see a production of Spongebob?” Burrows asked.

SCCC drama instructor Michelle Van Hessen served director for the show, which had a run of three shows in Liberal. For information on future events at SCCC, be sure to like the SCCC Drama Department page on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/scccdramadept/.
