Satanta Students Well Represented in SCCC Poetry Contest

Seward County Community College (SCCC) Poetry Contest winners from Satanta High School include Leslie Cabrera, Brittani Lauppe, Lake Sunderland, Kenia Hermosillo, and Jody Zimmerman; these students were all been chosen to present their poetry at the SCCC Poetry Coffeehouse on April 12, 2019, at the school’s student union.
Satanta High School seniors Leslie Cabrera and Brittani Lauppe both placed in the scholarship division. Cabrera presented her poem “Drown in the Water,” which was given an honorable mention, and Lauppe presented her work “Lost and Found,” which won third place. Satanta High School junior Kenia Hermosillo was awarded first place in the contest's scholarship division; she presented “Never You.” Her work earned her a scholarship to SCCC. Lake Sunderland, a junior, was awarded an honorable mention in the scholarship category. He presented “The Ride.”
Satanta High School sophomore Jody Zimmerman won first place in the “Young Poets” category and had a second poem named honorable mention. Jody presented her two poems “I Hope” and “Death” at the SCCC Coffee House. All five of these poets are students of Ryan Burrows who said of their success, “I am particularly proud of the work of these students because these poems were written completely outside of class and reflect the commitment of their authors to creative writing.”
