The Satanta High School Art Class had works to enter at an annual art competition at Fort Hays State University on April 17. The art competition is an invitational event with 168 Kansas high schools in attendance and over 1,700 pieces of artwork were placed on display this year. Satanta senior Brittani Lauppe and Satanta freshman Heidi Neef both received certificates of recognition at the meet from the three judges that assess all the works on display. Satanta senior Adan Gutierrez had two of his pieces receive a certificate of recognition and in so doing earned a medal in art.
A chalk-drawing competition is done while the judging takes place across campus. Mr. Jeff Locke, Satanta High School art instructor said of this event: “The area in front of the art building at Fort Hays State is perfect for the chalk drawing event. This year the idea to expound upon was to include a squirrel in a movie or album cover from our pop culture. Brittani Lauppe took charge and determined that portraying a Taylor Swift album cover as a squirrel subject would be the project. After all was completed, a picture was taken of the chalk artwork with all the Satanta art students that made it happen. It was a great time for all and it was finished in time so that it could be judged. This annual competition and exhibition is a great experience for our A\art students to participate in. Brittani Lauppe, Adan Gutierrez, Dakota Oliver, Leslie Cabrera, Lake Sunderland and Gabriel Mendoza had a great time at the Fort Hays State University Annual High School Art Competition and Exhibition!”
