Students Urged to Think Before They Post

by Janet Basilio

Social media...it can be our greatest friend and our worst enemy. This was the message delivered by Chet Kuplen, founder of Sports in Kansas and presenter at the recent “Think Before You Post” assembly at Satanta Jr.-Sr. High School. Kuplen’s presentation was filled with stories detailing the hazards of carelessly using social media.

Of course everyone has social media, and its impact on society is huge. Not only are users potentially putting themselves in danger, but they are also putting their future at risk. While most of us are aware of the darker side of social media, we don’t really think about the damage we’re causing to our future selves when we’re posting. Kuplen shared more than one story about how a single post a person made in junior high cost them a scholarship or job.

The assembly was a good reminder of how our actions can come back to haunt us. We appreciated the presentation encouraging us to stay positive when on social media because you never know how what you’ve said or done may impact you and others.
