Satanta Jr. High Begins StuCo Chapter

by Yanisa Gonzalez

It’s a question at least as old as this building: Why can’t the junior high students have a student council? Though there has never been a really good explanation, nothing more came of it until this year. JH teachers credit a couple of different factors: Mr. Dusin, the HS StuCo sponsor who has had the discussion more than once, and COVID, which allowed JH students to participate in the 2020 Student Council conference for the first time because it was hosted virtually. The JH students who took part in the conference were more determined than before to create the organization.

Junior high students returned to school in August to find that the question of whether or not there would be a StuCo would no longer have to be asked; there WOULD be a JH chapter.  Structurally, it looks different from the HS chapter: Rather than hold general elections, Mr. Dusin and the JH faculty decided that selecting an executive council with representatives from each grade would be a better fit for the brand-new organization.

The executive council are Xander Garcia (8th grade), Mia Burrows, Edgar Najera, and Agustin Salas (7th grade),  and Lauren Dusin and Gerald Sisk (6th grade). The executive council members attended the StuCo meeting in Dodge City, KS, with Mr. Dusin and HS StuCo members. Thirty-one JH students joined as open members.

Their first activity as a group would be to create a homecoming float for the parade. The JH StuCo also hosted an open gym/game night after their last home volleyball and football games of the season. They are looking forward to having more fun activities as well as being more involved in the happenings of Satanta Jr.-Sr. High School.
