Satanta High School Shines at SPIAA Big Read Project Competition The 2025-2026 SPIAA Big Read project competition concluded on January 14 at Kiowa County High School, with each league school submitting up to ten entries. Satanta High School students excelled, earning multiple medals for their outstanding work, which were awarded at United Wireless Arena on Saturday, January 31 at the SPIAA Basketball Championship. The following Satanta students were recognized: Liam Hatcher, Harley Heatherman, and Melissa Chavez: 3D Art, Gold (Award of Excellence) Adan Ramirez: Non-fiction Writing, Gold Mia Burrows: Non-fiction Writing, Gold (Award of Excellence) Jalynn Hockett: Non-fiction Writing, Gold (Award of Excellence) Lauren Dusin: Non-fiction Writing, Gold (Award of Excellence) Owen Gilmore: Graphic Design, Bronze Hannah Wood: Graphic Design, Gold Dylan Doerksen: Creative Writing: Prose, Gold (Award of Excellence) Gissell Rubio: Creative Writing: Poetry, Gold (Award of Excellence) Kaden Zabel: 3D Art, Silver Medal-winning high school projects were displayed at United Wireless Arena during the SPIAA League Basketball Tournament, running January 26–31. Student award winners in grades 9-12 were honored between the girls’ and boys’ championship games. This year, both the junior high and high school divisions of the Big Read focused on dystopian literature, a genre that imagines unsettling futures shaped by technology, systems of power, shifting cultural values, and the consequences of human decision-making. Throughout the fall, students examined how dystopian storytelling raises urgent questions about the world we inhabit today and the world we may be creating for tomorrow. The Big Read culminating event took place on November 12, when students traveled to Greensburg for viewings of Wall-E and Ready Player One, accompanied by guided discussions on dystopian conventions and the genre’s relevance to contemporary issues. These shared conversations encouraged students to consider themes such as environmental change, technological dependence, surveillance, inequality, and the struggle for individuality in modern societies. This impactful experience was made possible by a generous grant from the Community Foundation of Southwest Kansas, a steadfast supporter of the SPIAA Big Read. Launched in 2016, the SPIAA Big Read began as a collaborative initiative among league English teachers, initially featuring To Kill a Mockingbird. Over the years, the program has expanded to include books such as Fahrenheit 451, Rocket Boys, and Life in a Jar: The Irena Sendler Project. With a junior high division added after its first year, the Big Read continues to foster academic excellence and inter-school collaboration through its evolving focus on literature, genre, and themes.
