USD 507’s Summer Learning Program  is underway! This program, which spans grades PK-12, is not a remediation program. It is an enrichment program focused on stopping learning regression (often referred to as the summer slide). The money for this program, now in its second year, comes from federal Esser funds.

At the grade school, Summer Learning numbers are approaching 50. These students often begin their day in the cafeteria where free breakfast is provided. They then attend a 10-minute music class before entering a rotation of academic activities that last until 11:30. Many students stay for lunch, which is also free. Our kitchen serves 75-80 lunches each day to children birth to age 18.

Junior and Senior High students follow a similar schedule, meeting from 8:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at the high school. The focus there is currently on project-based learning with the goal of opening a Food Truck (Bus), which will be open for just one day on Friday, June 17 from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at Hazen Plumbing, Main Street.

The food bus (dubbed Amigos el Indio) will feature homemade Mexican food combos (tacos, burritos, or quesadillas) with chips and salsa, rice and beans, and choice of beverage. Be sure to try our horchata and agua frescas!

Students have been working in committees to learn graphic design, accounting, and culinary skills. About 16 students are involved in the project. They look forward to the profit-sharing portion of their learning experience and thank the community for its outpouring of support.

If your child would like to try Summer Learning, the next two-week session begins Monday, June 20
