Students in Mr. Tegeler’s High School Weights and Junior High PE classes participated in the 9/11 Memorial Stair Walk today. To honor the nearly 3,000 lives lost and the extraordinary bravery of the first responders, students went out to the home football bleachers and walked for roughly half an hour. With 30 steps in our bleachers, the math works out to about 70 trips up and down to equal the climb those heroes faced, with some completing the 70 trips and others coming close to the mark—demonstrating courage and perseverance in the spirit of remembrance.
Firefighters who responded on the morning of September 11th carried heavy gear, including oxygen tanks weighing roughly 25 pounds. To replicate a portion of that challenge, students carried backpacks loaded with 25 pounds—either the entire time or by rotating every five trips. We did the math based on the figure of 4,180 steps, which comes from the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation’s official 9/11 Memorial Stair Climbs. For reference, the figure of 2,200 steps represents the climb of 110 stories in one of the World Trade Center towers. We chose to use the full 4,180 steps so students could better understand the true scale of what the first responders endured that morning.
Though the heat made the task challenging, our students pressed on with determination and pride—honoring the lives lost and the heroic spirit that defines our nation. Even though today’s younger generations were not yet born on 9/11, they, as well as all of us, still carry the responsibility to remember. We will never forget .
