SHS Fall Standout Athlete: Harley Heatherman

Harley Heatherman, a freshman, made history this season as the first girl golfer in school history. As a freshman, she competed in five varsity tournaments, including a loaded and talented field of 55 golfers at the 3-2-1-A Regional in Goodland, where she finished 36th overall. Harley was one of only six freshmen in the entire tournament — and she finished 1st among them, while also being the only 1A freshman in the field, with the others coming from 2A and 3A schools!

Coach Tegeler said, “Harley has such a bright future in this sport. She has that competitive mentality, always wanting to get better, and every day after practice I felt she got 1% better. She also shows great mental toughness, which is such an important trait in golf. For example, at one tournament she had a super rough front nine but bounced back on the back nine, improving by 23 strokes. I’m really excited to coach and watch her grow in this sport over the next three years.”

We are so proud of you, Harley!

Over her four-year high school and club volleyball career, Cameron reached an incredible milestone with 1,000+ kills! Coach Wenta added, “Cameron was a huge asset to our team.”

Congratulations, Cameron, on an outstanding season and career! We are proud of you!

On October 29, the Chieftain Yearbook Staff traveled to the grade school to lead a camera training for interested 5th graders — and all fourteen students signed up to participate!

GS Photography Adviser Tiffany Briggs and Chieftain Adviser Courtney Dunn partnered to create opportunities for these young photographers to capture life around the grade school while fostering leadership, creativity, and positive behavior.

An incentive program has also been developed to encourage continued participation. Students who meet expectations may have the opportunity to join yearbook photographers at school events—like home basketball games—to experience taking photos from the sidelines.

After completing the training and signing a photography contract, each 5th grader will receive a certificate of completion recognizing their commitment and new skills.

Student photos may be featured on Facebook, the school website, and even in the yearbook!

We’re excited to see their work in action — welcome to the team, 5th grade!

SJH Fall Standout Athlete, Ava Manriquez. According to her coach, "Ava Manriquez showed great leadership throughout our volleyball season. She made sure to keep the team on task during our practices and did well keeping her grades up in the classroom. Whether she was on the court or on the sidelines, she was vocal and a great asset to our team. I was proud to have coached her for all three of her junior high volleyball years."
