Satanta FCCLA Concludes National Leadership Conference in Washington, D.C.

Satanta FCCLA’s trip to the National Leadership Conference has come to a close after several busy and memorable days in Washington, D.C.

FCCLA adviser Ms. Erika Alexander and Satanta High School student Clayton Kunselman enjoyed exploring the nation’s capital, attending leadership sessions, and connecting with FCCLA members from across Kansas and the nation.

Kunselman competed in three Challenge Tests during the conference. Although he did not place among the top three competitors, he came very close, earning two fourth-place finishes and one sixth-place finish.

Alexander said she was proud of Kunselman for embracing the new experience and challenging himself in multiple competitive areas.

On Tuesday, Alexander and Kunselman spent the day at the convention center with the Sublette FCCLA delegation. Sublette student Trelawney Horinek presented her STAR Event project in Fashion Construction, while Kunselman attended student sessions focused on safe driving and teamwork. The evening concluded with dinner at The Cheesecake Factory.

On Wednesday, Kunselman joined members of the Sublette delegation for sightseeing in Washington, D.C., including a visit to one of the city’s museums. Alexander spent the day volunteering as a room consultant for the Repurpose and Redesign STAR Event. The group later attended a general session and enjoyed dinner at The Capital Burger.

Thursday was a nonstop day of activities. Alexander and Kunselman joined thousands of FCCLA members on Capitol Hill for the organization’s Rally on the Hill. Afterward, they visited the United States Botanic Garden, where they found Kansas’ state flower, the sunflower, among the many plants and flowers on display.

Kansas FCCLA members then participated in a luncheon cruise on the Potomac River. Kunselman spent much of the cruise dancing with fellow Kansas FCCLA members, while Alexander enjoyed the views of Washington, D.C.

The delegation also toured the U.S. Capitol with an aide from Sen. Jerry Moran’s office. The day concluded with the final general session, which featured the Knowledge Bowl and Style Review—two of the most popular events of the conference.

Before beginning the trip home Friday, Alexander and Kunselman attended part of the awards session to support Horinek, who earned first place in her competition level for Fashion Construction.

Despite a few unexpected developments during the trip, the conference was a positive and rewarding experience. Satanta FCCLA is already looking forward to the 2026–2027 school year and hopes to return to the National Leadership Conference in San Antonio in 2027 with additional STAR Event competitors.

Satanta FCCLA is in our nation’s capital for National FCCLA!

The organization is represented by faculty leader Erika Alexander and Satanta High School student Clayton Kunselman.

Getting to Washington, D.C., was an adventure, including a 5:00 a.m. flight out of Tulsa and a little extra excitement as they worked to find a flight—but they made it!

After arriving at the convention center, Clayton competed in Challenge Testing, where he completed three different tests and felt like he did fairly well. This was a new experience for Satanta FCCLA, so they were not sure exactly how to prepare, but Clayton was willing to step up and try something different.

The day ended with the opening session, which gave a nod to 1776 with a Revolutionary War drum and fife band. It has been a fun couple of days seeing the sights of D.C., even if mostly from a distance, and joining nearly 10,000 other FCCLA members from across the country.
